KEMPNER, TX — The Lampasas County Sheriff's Office is investigating a suspected murder after a 24-year-old man was shot and killed outside of his home.

According to the sheriff's office, around 11:23 p.m. on Monday, September 16, deputies received a call regarding several gunshots in the 400 block of Pecos Lane in Kempner. A second caller told deputies she believed her son had been shot.

When deputies arrived, they found several people in the front yard and carport area. They also found 24-year-old Vance Helzer suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the chest and torso.

Acadian EMS provided life-saving treatment, but Helzer was pronounced dead at the scene by Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Greg Chapman.

LCSO says Helzer was transported to Southwest Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas for an autopsy.

Investigators with the Lampasas County Sheriff's Office are investigating the suspected homicide. The Texas Rangers are assisting the sheriff's office.

Several people were interviewed at the scene.

LCSO says drug paraphanalia and controlled substance were located near the home.

The sheriff's office believes Helzer was shot while standing near the street in front of his home.
