19-year-old arrested for allegedly shooting and killing his grandfather

GATESVILLE, TX — A 19-year-old has been arrested for allegedly shooting and killing his grandfather Monday morning.

Around 8:21 a.m. on October 26, officers with the Gatesville Police Department were dispatched to a home in the 400 block of Bridge Street regarding a dead person.

When officers arrived, they found a man lying in the front doorway to the home with an apparent gunshot wound to the head.

the man has been identified as 76-year-old Leonard Carroll Barnes, who was the owner of the home. He was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Jim Caldwell.

Barnes' body has been sent to Dallas for an autopsy.

Investigators, with the assistance of a Ranger from the Texas Department of Public Safety, began processing the scene, talking with neighbors and witnesses to identify potential suspects.

Authorities say their investigating has led them to arrest 19-year-old Kaleb Jeramiah Johnson Barnes of Ganesville. He was arrested for murder, a first degree felony.

Barnes is the grandson of Leonard Barnes and reportedly lives at the same address.

Police say this is a very active case and the investigation is ongoing.
