WACO, TX — For the October 1 edition of Central Texas Living Ann Harder spoke with Dr. Randy Umstead, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Charles W. Evans Chair in Voice and Associate Professor of Voice.

William E. Schmidt had a vision for creating opportunities for young singers that propel them on their journey toward a career in the arts. Together with his extended family, he formed the William E. Schmidt Foundation in 1992. Now, Schmidt Vocal Competition reaches more than 400 students each year and takes place in 17 locations throughout the U.S. The competition provides singers with an opportunity to perform live in front of an audience for the chance to win cash awards and scholarships. It also offers coaching and master class training with premier artists. Baylor is hosting the southwestern part of the U.S. for the competition for the eight year in a row.

The event is free and open to the public. It will be held in Roxy Grove Hall in the Waco Hall complex on Baylor's campus, Saturday, October 5. Singing will start around 9:00 a.m., there will be a masterclass with judges at 2:00 p.m., the final round will begin around 3:30 p.m. and awards will be announced around 5:00 p.m.
