BRAZOS CO, TX — The Brazos County Emergency Communication District is looking to hire for the Public Safety dispatchers.

Halley Challis has been a Headset Hero for Brazos County 9-1-1 Dispatch for 13 years.

“Once I got the job it was something that was always exciting and different and fast-paced and then you also get that sense of helping others every single day that you come to work.

Now, Brazos County 9-1-1 is looking to add to their team of Public Safety Telecommunicators.

“Not every call is going to be an emergency, some people are just looking for help and advice but that every call you pick up there is that possibility of emergency and you have to be ready to react and rely on your training,” says Challis.

Brazos County 9-1-1 dispatches for county agencies, the sheriff’s office, and the City of Bryan Fire and Police departments.

“9-1-1 dispatch is who you speak to when you call to have an officer respond to you. So, they are the first people you contact.

Bryan Police Officer Kole Taylor says it takes a very compassionate person to be a 9-1-1 dispatcher.

“The ability to talk to somebody whose obviously probably at a low point in their life and needs a voice of reason and somebody to help guide them through that, it can make a world of a difference for somebody because that’s the first responder that they are going to be speaking to until somebody actually shows up and has that face to face interaction.”

The hiring process for Brazos County 9-1-1 is a ten-step process, that includes background checks, health screenings, and interviews.

“You also have to be efficient in typing and multitasking and then just kind of dedicated to want to help your community and serve others and be a part of emergency services,” says Challis.

Brazos County 9-1-1 hopes they can add new members to their headset heroes ready to serve the community by January 2021.

The application deadline to become a Public Safety Telecommunicator is September 15 and can be found at http://www.bc911.org/#employment.
