COMMERCE, TX — Texas A&M Commerce was sheltering in place while they investigated a shooting that left two dead.
According to Texas A&M Commerce officials, the University Police Department received a call around 10:17 a.m. from a student who lives at Pride Rock residence hall.
When they arrived, they found two adult females dead.
The third person, a small child, was taken to the hospital for treatment but is in stable condition.
A&M-Commerce University Police Department has confirmed the identities of the two women.
The first victim is 19-year-old Deja Matts. Matts was a freshman at A&M-Commerce and was pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Public Healt, according to the University Police Department. She was from Garland, Texas.
The second victim is 20-year-old Abbaney Matts, sister of Deja. Abbaney was not an enrolled student at A&M-Commerce.
The third victim, two-year-old son of Abbaney Matts, was treated and released to the care of family members.
According to the University Police Department, the shooting appears to be a targeted, isolated event. This remains an active investigation with multiple law enforcement agencies assisting.
The Rayburn Student Center is available for students that may be displaced by the ongoing investigation.

All classes, programs and events on the Texas A&M Commerce campus will be canceled on Feb. 3, Feb. 4, and Feb. 5. This will include all remote locations and online.
