MASON COUNTY — The Mason County Courthouse caught fire Thursday night and became engulfed in flames and is considered a total loss by law enforcement.

According to KXAN, law enforcement officials have a suspect in custody that they believe started the fire.

Mason County Judge Jerry Bearden told KXAN that authorities took a man into custody outside of Mason County after a "slow pursuit".

Authorities believe the suspect started the fire that left the courthouse burned down along with a home in Mason County.

The fire at the courthouse began around 10 pm Thursday night and by 1:30 am Friday morning, the courthouse's outer rock wall was the only thing standing.

The courthouse was preparing for renovations at the time of the fire and all county records and documents had been moved before the fire.
