HOUSTON, TX — Three horses were killed after authorities say the driver struck a pillar carrying a farm trailer on Thursday.

According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, the crash happened at around midnight on Highway 249 in Houston.

He said a driver struck a pillar, and deputies believe alcohol may have been a factor of the crash.

The driver was airlifted to a nearby hospital and is not expected to survive.

Three horses that were in the trailer were killed.

According to KTRK, investigators believe the driver was also speeding.

They plan to pursue animal cruelty charges for the deaths of the horses.
