EL PASO, TX — A 7-year-old child was killed near an elementary school Wednesday morning.

El Paso ISD said the student was struck by a car while crossing the crosswalk near Roberts Elementary School. She was headed to school.

The student, 7-year-old Alexa Barrera, later died from her injuries.

They said thoughts and prayers of everyone in the district are with the family of the child and the entire Roberts community.

"EPISD counselors have been dispatched to the school to provide any student, parent or employee with any help they may need. Although this case is being handled by El Paso Police Department, EPISD PD officers are on the scene to help with the investigation," the district said.

A GoFundMe page was created to help out the family of the child. The goal was $7,000, but as of 5:45 a.m. on Thursday, the page has over $9,600 raised.

"We are looking for help to cover funeral expenses for my granddaughter who was tragically killed on her way to school. Anything will help. Thank you and God Bless," the page said.
