EDINBURG, TX — The suspect accused of shooting a DPS Trooper during a traffic accident is now in custody.

Texas Department of Public Safety Officials said 24-year-old Victor Alejandro Godinez was taken into custody overnight on Saturday.

Authorities say Godinez was involved in an accident near 10th St. and Freddy Gonzalez Dr. just before 9 p.m.

Godinez fled from the scene and was later found by a DPS Trooper in the 1500 block of S. Maltese St. That's where authorities said the trooper was shot.

According to the Associated Press, the trooper, Moises Sanchez, is in stable but critical condition after being shot.

DPS released a statement on Thursday:

"Trooper Sanchez arrived at the hospital in extremely critical condition on Saturday night. The Neuro ICU doctors, surgeons, nurses and staff went to work immediately to address a gunshot wound to his shoulder and head. Since being admitted to the hospital, he has remained medically sedated and numerous procedures have been performed to help address his injuries. He has been stabilized and remains in critical condition. We appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers for continued progress of his condition."

Godinez was in jail Sunday on a $3 million bond. He is being charged with three counts of attempted capital murder of a peace officer, the AP said.
