KILLEEN, TX — A Killeen ISD middle school student was hit by a truck after exiting a bus, according to the district.

KISD Police and Killeen Police were investigating an accident involving a middle school student and a vehicle near Hilltop Loop and Wales on Monday.

Following the investigation, the Killeen Police Department cited the former KISD bus driver for failing to activate the warning lights on the bus at the appropriate time. The driver was also terminated, according to the school district.

"At this point our primary concern is the well-being and recovery of the student. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the family. At last check, the student was in stable condition," the district said.

All KISD Transportation employees were provided additional training on the proper ways to report emergencies and the importance of all precautionary light and signal protocols.

Early reports indicate the student exited the bus and was hit by a truck while crossing in front of the bus.

Out of an abundance of caution the student was airlifted to the hospital. As of Tuesday, he is listed in stable condition.

Killeen ISD would like to remind drivers it is against the law to pass a school bus with flashing red lights and/or stop signs displayed. Drivers should also slow down when a bus is flashing yellow lights, this is a signal that the bus is about to stop.
