25-year-old man dead after shooting at Crew Hookah Lounge; suspect in custody

KILLEEN, TX — The Killeen Police Department is investigating a death of a 25-year-old man was fatally shot at the Crew Hookah Lounge Sunday morning.

Officers were dispatched around 2:13 a.m. to the Crew Hookah Lounge, located at 4400 Watercrest Road, in reference to a 911 call about a shooting victim.

The officers located a man suffering from a gunshot wound when they arrived.

According to Killeen Police, officers started to perform life saving measures until paramedics arrived. The victim was transported to the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center in critical condition.

The victim, identified as 25-year-old Anthony Newton, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at 4:03 a.m. by Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke.

Justice of the Peace Cooke ordered an autopsy to be performed at the Southwest Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas.

On Wednesday, February 24, Killeen PD announced the suspect in Newton's death has been taken into custody.

The suspect is in the Killeen City Jail awaiting formal charges from the Bell County District Attorney's Office.

On May 5, the Bell County Grand Jury was presented this case for review.

After deliberation, the jury returned an indictment charging 21-year-old Gregory Ellis with tampering with or fabricating evidence.

There was no action taken on the shooting as it was deemed non-criminal.
