HEWITT, TX — In 13 years, Kim Henderson has gone from patrol officer to detective to the Hewitt Police Department's first female sergeant.

She's been a detective for Hewitt's Criminal Investigation Division for the last two years. After investigating cases mainly at her desk, this promotion will take her right back to her roots of paroling the streets of her community.

"I worked night shift primarily, I stayed on 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. for the most part," Henderson said. "I'm going back as a supervisor, which means I'm kind of the one looking out for everybody else."

Working those hours made Henderson a master of DWI enforcement. During her time as a patrol officer, she showed other officers how to conduct field sobriety tests.

She also became a drug recognition expert.

Hewitt Police Chief Jim Devlin said it was that type of drive and work ethic that got her the job.

"One of the hardest arrests and processes, this is what she chose to make her little niche and she excelled at it," Devlin said. "She's a natural leader. She has the ability to take on a task and bring it to a good positive resolution."

Henderson has worked hard to get here, the title of first woman to do it, is just a bonus.

"It didn't even occur to me until someone else mentioned it," Henderson said. "I've always just been a police officer. It's never been a male or female thing to me, I just do my job."

Henderson wants other women to see her victory as one they can achieve themselves.

"If this is what you want to do, you can do it," Henderson said. "Be a good example for other females who may want to follow in your footsteps."

Devlin said on top of being the department's first female sergeant, she's also just one of two drug recognition experts in McLennan County.

The Hewitt Police Department took to social media on April 18 to congratulate their newest sergeant, Kim Henderson.
