KILLEEN, TX — A Bell County school district is in need of school bus drivers and they are reaching out to the community.

On Thursday, Killeen ISD held a Commercial Driver’s License seminar for anyone interested in becoming a Killeen bus driver.

The seminar was held at the district building off W.S. Young in Killeen to show how KISD can help potential drivers obtain a free CDL and training for the district.

The district said they have over 240 drivers right now but that is not enough.

“We’ve got to get the students to and from school safely and to and from their activities safely every day. And we just can’t, we can do it and we are doing it but we could do it way more effectively if we had about 70 plus more drivers,” said Director of Transportation for KISD Edward Thomas.

The school district has an arrangement with the Department of Transportation that allows them to train and test new drivers on site after two to four weeks of training.

KISD said new drivers will be paid while training and the average hourly wage for their bus drivers is just over $15 and drivers can receive several large bonuses throughout the year for safe driving.
