WASHINGTON D.C. (EWTN/CNN) – Second Lady Karen Pence is taking some heat after taking on a new job.

Pence's office announced earlier this week that she's now teaching elementary art at Immanuel Christian School in northern Virginia.

The second lady taught at the same school while her husband was serving in Congress.

Her decision to teach at the school drew attention from advocates in the LGBT community.

According to the school's website, it can refuse to employ gay and lesbian teachers or enroll children with gay or lesbian parents.

Vice President Mike Pence is defending his wife's decision.

"We're used to the criticism... but I have to tell ya, to see major news organizations attacking Christian education is deeply offensive to us. This criticism of Christian education in America should stop," said Pence.

Pence, the former Indiana governor and congressman, has long maintained that marriage is between a man and a woman.
