New York City residents will now have the option of issuing gender “X” on their birth certificates.

According to the Associated Press, the law allowing the choice of “X” takes effect on Tuesday. The law was passed in 2018.

The “X” gender is to allow people to reflect their “true gender identity.” Parents can also choose “X” for their newborns.

New York is joining California, Oregon and Washington in allowing an undesignated gender on birth certificates.

A similar provision is set to take effect in New Jersey in February.
