Some Killeen ISD students received special gifts today.

In partnership with the Killeen Police Department and Academy Sports + Outdoors, 30 students at East Ward Elementary School were surprised with bicycles and helmets as part of its annual holiday bike donation program.

What students thought was a Killeen Police Department bike safety activity, quickly turned into more when some of them received new bikes.

"It makes me feel real good. I know probably most of the kids in here probably wanted new bikes," said Police Officer Derrick Burleson.

"It was great. The kids were excited. I think once they really realized what was going on, that they were getting the bikes,  you know we had a lot of excitement, and I'm just so happy to be able to be a part of it," said Alison Mooney,  Academy Sports + Outdoors regional marketing specialist.

Children were rewarded for perfect attendance, academic performance and good behavior.

According to Academy Sports + Outdoors, the entire holiday bike donation program benefits 5,500 students and provides local schools across Academy's 16-state footprint.
