Central Texas agencies will participate in a national prescription drug take-back day on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In Hewitt since Oct. 10, people have been able to dispose of expired or unused prescription drugs they no longer need.

The Drug Enforcement Administration Program aims to educate the public about the potential abuse of medications and to prevent people from throwing them in the trash or flushing them down the toilet.

"It's for safety and controlled access to the narcotics. We don't want the wrong people to get the hands on them," Hewitt Police Assistant Chief Tuck Saunders said.

Other agencies like Waco, Temple, Killeen and Harker Heights police will participate in the program.
