When Mary Duty was heading to work this morning, she noticed that someone spray painted a black X over a Ted Cruz sign located on Bosque and Estates Drive.

Duty is the chairwoman of the McLennan County Democratic Party. She's also friends with Jon Ker, the chairman for the Republican Party of McLennan County.

After calling Ker to tell him what happened, Duty decided to clean the sign off herself using a brillo pad.

She recorded the incident and shared it to Facebook, hoping to spread a message to the rest of the community that this type of behavior will not be tolerated.

"This is not how democracy works," Duty said. "If you don't like the candidate, you go vote for the other guy."

Ker said the signs were put up on Monday. He was disappointed to hear that three of them were vandalized in a matter of hours.

"The idea to go paint over somebody's sign is so low class," Ker said. "The way to show your support for somebody else is to get out and talk about their candidacy, not try to destroy the other person."

Ker and Duty agree that people with opposing views should still treat one another with respect.
