CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS (KXXV) -

A Coastal Texas police department has placed a mound of sand in front of its station in preparation of a tropical storm threat.

San Benito Police Department placed the sand mound in front of its station for residents in the area to bag their own sandbags.

Residents in that area need to prove that they live in the city limits and need to bring their own shovels.

A total of six bags will be given to residents and 10 to businesses.

The police department said that if any updates come in that indicate a tropical storm will directly impact the area, a full sandbag distribution will begin.

Other alternatives to sandbags include:

  • Bags of potting soil
  • Filling empty plastic bags with water
  • Empty sandbags
  • Reusing old pillowcases to fill with sand
