Mission Waco wants to help get kids ready for the upcoming school year by providing them with backpacks full of school supplies.

The nonprofit has about 1,000 backpacks filled with folders, pens and pencils for lower-income parents to buy for $5.

Mission Waco said they recognize the financial burden school supplies can be for families.

"Parents love to provide for their children but oftentimes its just too expensive to do so. And so to see these kids light up and to get these brand new backpacks with school supplies in there. It gets them excited for school," John Calaway, executive director of Mission Waco, said.

Mission Waco is offering resource sessions to inform parents about the different resources they offer.

Backpacks will be sold Saturday, Aug. 4 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m and Tuesday, Aug. 7 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Mission Waco Children's Center at 1201 North 16th Street in Waco.
