The Waco Family YMCA is taking extra steps to keep lifeguards safe during the summer.

YMCA of Central Texas Aquatics Director Evan Bates said the nonprofit organization is limiting the number of time lifeguards work at the indoor or outdoor pools.

During the summer, lifeguards work four-hour shifts with 15 to 20-minute breaks every hour.

Those outside wear sunscreen, hats and occasionally a towel around their neck soaked in cold water to help keep them cool.

"The reason we try to mitigate their time both in the indoor pool and outdoor pool is because both pools in the sun or out of the sun get hot and humid and we are trying to mitigate any heat-related illnesses," Bates said.

During the extreme heat next week, lifeguards are not allowed to work back-to-back shifts and are only allowed to pick up extra shifts on their days off.
