A gas leak prompted the evacuation of the Harker Heights Sam's Club on Friday, Harker Heights Fire Chief Paul Sims said.

Sims said high levels of gas were recorded inside the store toward the shipping area. The last reading of the gas level was in the 70s, but Sims says a safe level needs to be at 9 or below.

The store was evacuated safely around 11:30 a.m. and will be closed until the gas levels return to normal. Officials will be checking the gas level every 30 minutes.

The gas was turned off to the building just before 1 p.m.

Harker Heights Police and Fire Departments, as well as Atmos Energy, responded to the store when the alarms were activated for high gas levels.

Police said that after investigating, it was found that it was a sewer gas leak and not a natural gas leak. No other leaks were determined in the area.

Levels were safe again at 3:15 p.m.

Sam's Club did not comment on the incident.
