Gerald Stewart's desire to give back to his community began when his own family was in need.
Stewart's son was hospitalized for Spinal Meningitis, and during the 18-day treatment, Stewart said he walked around and saw lots of children that weren't going to make it home.
At that moment, he realized he could make a difference by donating blood.
Stewart occasionally gave blood before, but after his son's lengthy stay in the hospital, it developed into his life's calling.
"I started giving on a regular basis and at 16 gallons I switched over to giving platelets," Stewart said.
Now, after donating more than 50 gallons of blood and platelets, giving blood has become his passion.
"It's sort of a competition thing. It may seem strange, but why not? It fuels and motivates me to give even more," Stewart said.
Stewart believes you don't have to be a hero to help some.
"I didn't go into the Military, I didn't work for the fire or police departments. I could give back in that simple way and that can be so important to some people," Stewart said.
If you are looking for a way to help others, KXXV is hosting a blood drive on Thursday. The Carter Bloodcare bus will be parked in front of the station starting at 11 a.m.
