The Central Texas community stood in for the family of an unaccompanied veteran as he was laid to rest Thursday.

Dozens came to honor and remember the life of Private Steven Mayer, a man they never met.

Private Mayer served in the United States Marine Corps in 1975.

Those in attendance said it's moments like this where people can truly support the troops.

"He wrote a blank check, just like the rest of us, that pledged to sacrifice our lives for this country, and so, in that honor, we'd be amiss not to be here and at least have a good send off in absence of his family," Marc George, an Army veteran, said.
