The death of an off-duty Temple police officer is believed to be the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

Police were dispatched to officer Christopher Gallup's home on May 25. The 30-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Ted Duffield.

Temple Police Chief Floyd Mitchell released a statement asking for prayers for the department.

The department is providing an opportunity for officers who responded to the scene to speak with counselors.

Gallup was with the Temple Police Department for three years, from January 2015 until his passing. He joined the U.S. Air Force in October 2006 and served tours in Afghanistan and Korea.

A GoFundMe account has also been set up and donations are being accepted.
