Baylor women’s tennis senior Theresa Van Zyl garnered Academic All-Big 12 first team recognition, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon. It is her third time receiving the honor from the conference. Van Zyl is the seventh player in program history to secure three Academic All-Big 12 first team selections in her career.

First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA. Honorees must also be in their second season with their sports program and compete in at least 20 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. A total of 30 female student-athletes were honored this year.

Van Zyl, who is pursuing a degree in accounting at Baylor, is a four-time Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll selection. She was also honored as an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2017.

As the lone upperclassman, Van Zyl has primarily competed at the No. 1 singles position for the Bears this year. She is 12-13 overall, with an 8-3 mark in tournament action and a 4-10 dual match record. In doubles, Van Zyl has compiled a 9-14 mark at all three doubles positions.

The fifth-seeded Bears open postseason action on Friday, April 27 with a Big 12 Championships quarterfinal match against fourth-seeded Kansas at 9 a.m. (CT) at Texas Tennis Center in Austin, Texas.
