A big yellow school bus made its way around La Vega ISD schools today, but it was dropping off checks rather than students.

Members of the La Vega Pirates Education Foundation rode the bus to all five campuses to award 13 different grants totaling more than $36,000.

Teachers, board members and staff ran down the bus steps and into the schools ringing cowbells and waving pom poms.

The rowdy bunch wanted to make a scene as they surprised teachers with their oversized checks.

"A lot of energy, it's very exciting," said Jim Lambert, president of the La Vega Pirates Education Foundation.  "It's exciting to see the surprise for the teachers and it's exciting to be able to award these grants out to them."

Each teacher will use the grant to support creative and innovative programs that will enhance learning at their school.

The La Vega Pirates Education Foundation was founded back in 2015. It has since awarded nearly $200,000 in awards and grants back to La Vega ISD.
