WACO, TX (KXXV) -

A new IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon will be held in Waco in October of 2018.

The event consists of a 1.2-mile swim through the Brazos River, a 56-mile single-loop bike course past the Lake Waco and through the Waco wetlands and a 13.1-mile double-loop run course.

"We are excited to add Waco to our IRONMAN 70.3 race series and look forward to growing the event in this beautiful and historic Texas community," said Scott Langen, IRONMAN Regional Director, Gulf Coast. "We are proud to offer this event in such a unique destination that is sure to provide athletes and their supporters a spectacular race experience."

Sports commission officials said a big reason for the triathlon coming to Waco is the city's natural resources.

"We have a beautiful river, excellent roads, and one of the largest and best city parks in the nation," Mayor of Waco Kyle Deaver.

The event will be held at Cameron Park on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2018, a weekend that does not have a home Baylor football game. It will offer 30 slots to the 2019 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Nice, France.

Waco City leaders said the race will bring more than $5 million of revenue to the area.

General registration for the event will be open on December 5 at ironman.com/waco70.3
