The McLennan County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad cleared the scene of a Beverly Hills neighborhood.

According to Beverly Hills Police, street department crews saw the door of a condemned home open around 9 a.m. on Friday. When they checked one of the bedrooms, they found what they believed to be live hand grenades and ammunition, police said.

At that time, the city employees contacted the police department, which said finding the ordinance was unusual.

"We do have a lot of veterans who live in our city so it's a probably a common thing, we don't know until after, after the fact," Beverly Hills Assistant Police Chief Thomas Schmidt said.

The scene was in the 700 block of Tulane Street, off New Road, near the Waco VA and across the Mr. Snow ice cream shop.

Schmidt said after he called the bomb squad, they determined they were not live.

"After them doing X-rays of every piece of equipment that was brought out of the house, it was determined they were duds so everything is safe and sound now," Schmidt said.

The 700 block of Tulane Street was closed for at least an hour while the bomb squad inspected the suspicious items. The neighbors who live within 300 feet of the red-tagged house who had been evacuated were able to return home before 12 p.m.

The scene has now been reopened.
