It's a new school year, and that means a new job for Jacob Donnell, the new principal at Waco ISD's Crestview Elementary School.  This is Donnell's first-ever job as a principal.

"I expect to feel a little bit of nervousness," Donnell said.

Donnell sports 12 years in education, the first seven as a high school math teacher and the past five in various administrative posts.  He says he's been looking forward to his first job as principal for a long time.

"I think looking back, so much of my life prepared me for this day, and at the time I didn't realize," said Donnell.  He added, "It's just neat to see how things have come together, and I'm just very excited to be here now taking advantage of this opportunity."

Donnell stressed his mission is a simple: make sure students are comfortable, welcomed and enjoy their learning experience, all while setting high expectations for himself and his staff.

Donnell welcomed students and staff for the first day of school on Thursday.  He likened his first day as principal to his time as a young athlete.

"It's like when I was playing sports and it was right before game day and we're trying to make our preparations, so there are definitely nerves involved. But, it's that good kind of nervousness that helps you kind of rise to the occasion. Like I say, I'm just excited," Donnell said.
