Over six decades ago, Texas' favorite burger chain Whataburger started as a humble burger stand by Harmon Dobson in Corpus Christi, Texas.

On August 8, 1950, the original stand opened on Ayers Street, known as Whataburger #1.

“Dobson had a bold idea: to serve a burger so big that it took two hands to hold, and so good that after a single bite customers couldn’t help but exclaim ‘What a burger!’” Whataburger says on its website.

Ten years later, in 1960 Whataburger grew to have 17 restaurants across Texas, Florida and Tennessee. Over the next two years, the familiar orange and white striped A-frames were built and French fries and hot pies were added to the menu.

In 1967, Dobson was killed in a plane crash causing his wife, Grace Dobson, to take over the business.

During the 1970s, the company grew to more than 200 locations across 12 states, the drive thru was installed, and many new items were added to the menu.

Now there are more than 790 Whataburger restaurants across the U.S. open 24-hours a day and seven days a week.

Whataburger remains family owned and operated to this day.
