The Department of Public Safety said they will no longer charge fees to local police departments.

DPS said they would originally charge fees for the forensic testing of DNA, toxicology and drug evidence mid-July.

Governor Greg Abbott requested to DPS withdraw its letter of intent to charge a fee for forensic analysis of physical evidence. The legislature agreed.

Under the 85th legislature budget, testing would have been unfunded and mandate for counties statewide.

The legislature increased requirements, but they did not increase funding for DPS so that they would be able to meet those demands.

"I do not support unfunded mandates and I am honored to work with so many statesmen that will fight alongside me in our cause to protect the counties from these executive burdens," said State Representative of District 60, Mike Lang.
