April is Sexually Transmitted Disease awareness month and one county in Texas has some of the highest rates in the entire state.
Bell County ranks second in the state for gonorrhea and third for chlamydia.
According to the Bell County Public Health District, Bell County rates higher than larger cities such as Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio.
The health district is working with area leaders to reduce the rates through education and behavior change recommendations.
The district also suggested that people who are sexually active to be tested annually for STDs and to use protection during sexual contact.
