Three McLennan basketball players were named to the 2017 NJCAA Region V All-Region Teams. Guard Velma Mitchell was selected to the women’s squad while guards Shannon Bogues and Isaiah Gurley were named to the men’s squad.
Mitchell, a guard from Rockdale, was named the North Texas Junior College Athletics Conference (NTJCAC) Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year. Mitchell averaged 17.0 points per game to lead the Highlassies and was the best in the conference. Bogues, a Killeen native, averaged 18.8 points per game to lead the Highlanders and earned the NTJCAC Player of the Year title. Gurley of Brooklyn, New York, was second on the Highlanders’ squad with a 17.5 points-per-game average and was named NTJCAC Newcomer of the Year. Both Bogues and Gurley were named first-team all-conference as well.
