Several shoppers in our area spent their Monday returning or exchanging gifts and taking advantage of post-Christmas Day sales.

At Academy Sports + Outdoors in Waco, two additional registers were used just for processing returns. On Monday afternoon, several people lined up behind those registers, including Jackie Williams.

"The line is very long. We just made a return at Toys "R" Us and it went very fast. We thought it was going to be faster but it's going to take a little while," Williams said.

Williams, who was standing in line with her children, planned to exchange an item that was missing a part.

"We had to return a portable disc golf set and we couldn't find another one so we were going to exchange it for a disc,” Williams said.

Academy’s Waco Store Director, Sonny Cowan, said Monday was the busiest return day for the store.

"Any holiday season is really big for sales and traffic but today, it's just some of the same customers who came in during the holiday season to buy the merchandise for the holidays are now coming in to do the swap out or get the correct item or maybe when they made it home, it wasn't what they thought they were getting,” Cowan said.

Other families were there to do some shopping and save some money, including Chelsea Reed who was helping her sister shop for a bike. She planned to use her allowance and money she received at Christmas to buy it.

The bike her sister picked was on clearance, which saved her $30.

"The less the bike costs, the better because she honestly doesn't have that much to spend,” Reed said.

At that store, clothing, footwear, hunting and fishing equipment were on sale as part of the end of season clearance event.

"[Monday] is the first day for our clearance event so you'll get a lot of shoppers looking for those last minute deals before the holidays are over, which is typically around New Year’s,” Cowan said.

Best Buy also had post-holiday deals on video game consoles, iPads and smart TVs.

According to the National Retail Federation, 48 percent of people surveyed in December said they planned to take advantage of after Christmas sales.

Other stores offering after Christmas sales include JCPenney, Kohl's, Target, Toys "R" Us and Cabela’s.
