Friends of Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery is asking for volunteers to assist with the annual holiday wreath project.

Each year family members and community volunteers gather to prepare and lay a wreath on each gravesite at the cemetery to honor fallen veterans.

Jean Shine, president of Friends of Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery said “in laying a wreath in our cemetery, we lay a wreath for all veterans throughout the world.”

Wreath preparation is set for Saturday, Nov. 19 at 10 a.m. in the Killeen Special Events Center at 3601 S. WS Young Drive.

The wreath laying ceremony will take place on Nov. 26 at 10 a.m. starting with a small ceremony and then the placement of large wreaths on the monuments that represent all the Fort Hood soldiers who died during current wars – even those not buried at the cemetery.

Family members will lay wreaths on the gravesites of their loved ones, and community members follow to fill in the thousands of graves that do not have representatives present.

The wreaths will be escorted in a trailer donated by Ken Ray of Towne Services to the cemetery via various motorcycle clubs and community riders. Non-motorcycle escorts are welcomed as well.

The procession will start at the Killeen Special Events Center at 8 a.m. on Nov. 26.

The wreaths will be retrieved on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 10 a.m. for storage.
