Midway ISD has released the name of the 12-year-old who was hit by a van on Hewitt Dr. Sunday night.

Sonia Harris is currently at McLane's Children's Hospital in Temple. She has been sedated and intubated.

The family said they appreciate the incredible amount of support they have received from friends and family, but would refer to not be contacted directly at this time.

"However, they do need your continued thoughts and prayers as we move through the next several days. Thank you for your support of this family, and for your continued prayerful consideration on Sonia’s behalf," Midway's Dr. Cox said in an email.

Harris is a 7th grader at Midway Middle School.

Harris was airlifted to McLane Children's Hospital in critical condition on Sunday night after a car hit her while riding her bicycle.

According to Hewitt Police, the two girls were attempting to cross Hewitt Dr. approximately 25 yards from the intersection of Hewitt Drive and Sun Valley Boulevard.

A 1998 blue/tan Ford traveling northbound on Hewitt Dr. hit Harris, according to the preliminary investigation.

“This is a terrible tragedy and I ask that you keep everyone involved in this incident in your thoughts and prayers," Hewitt Police Chief James Devlin said.

Witnesses said the other bicyclist was taken from the scene by her parents.

According to Midway ISD, the two girls are sisters and students at Midway Middle School.

The school district has counselors available for students who need them. In addition, the district is spending more time talking about pedestrian safety. On Monday morning, students watched a video about pedestrian safety.

The intersection was reopened just before 10 p.m. Hewitt, Robinson and Woodway are still investigating the accident.
