Officials confirmed that Lyle Blanchard, 59, died after a traffic-stop turned shootout involving a Bell County Sheriff's Deputy Tuesday afternoon.

The deputy was not hurt but Blanchard was pronounced dead at the scene by a Justice of the Peace. An autopsy was ordered.

Around 3:40 p.m.  A Bell County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to pull over a small van, but the driver refused to stop and drove into a driveway of a private property.

The incident happened near FM 2410 in Harker Heights just east of Rummel Road.

Blanchard was found on the 12000 block of East Knights Way with a gunshot wound to the upper torso.

Officials said a Department of Public Safety helicopter assisted in taking additional photos and footage of the crime scene.

Blanchard was the only occupant of the vehicle.

The Bell County Sheriff's deputy was not injured, but he has been placed on administrative leave until further notice.

The Texas Rangers and the Harker Heights Police will be jointly conducting an investigation.
