CHARLESTON, SC — The death of a Harleston, South Carolina DUI suspect is raising questions.
58-year-old Nathaniel Rhodes was involved in a car crash last August.
An officer, not Rhodes, signed a form refusing medical treatment.
So instead of being taken to a hospital, Rhodes was given a field sobriety test after officers say they found an open container in his vehicle.
Rhodes later complained of severe pain at the police station before collapsing.
It wasn't until then that he was transported to the hospital, where he died four days later.
Rhodes reportedly had eight broken ribs, internal injuries and a ruptured liver.
"My sister and I are both medical professionals and we look at this, and aside from being frustrated because that's our family, we can't understand being on the other side of it as a professional," said Megan Rhodes, his daughter.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement division (SLED) is investigating the incident.
In a news release, Chief Reynolds said Charleston police is "committed to protecting and serving the people of our city."
