(CNN) - The U.S. is planning to withdraw troops from Syria.
A U.S. Defense official told CNN Wednesday that planning is underway for a "full" and "rapid" withdrawal of troops.
The official said President Donald Trump made the decision and added that he has been signaling his desire to get out of Syria.
The U.S. has about 2,000 troops on the ground in Syria.
They are primarily training local forces to combat ISIS.
The U.S. has about 5,000 troops stationed in Iraq who can launch attacks in Syria if necessary.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday morning, the president tweeted, "we have defeated ISIS in Syria, my only reason for being there during the Trump Presidency."
