Kendrick Elementary School is on the giving kick along with most residents in the community.

They have partnered with Pack of Hope to help students in their school districts and others in McLennan County.

Pack of Hope is a non-profit organization that collects food each week to provide for kids to go home with on the weekends. This year, Kendrick Elementary decided to join in on the fun.

Kendrick Elementary has 18 of their own students receiving food each Friday from the organization and by helping collect the food they are hoping to involve more kids in the program.

"And depending on how many we collected in pounds, then they will add more students to our list," Dina Hoffman, a counselor at Kendrick Elementary said. "So, more students at Kendrick will benefit from the program."

The school decided to have all their students participate in the program by donating food throughout the month of December.

"It feels great to feed other kids because some people don't have that much food and we have a little bit too much food, but some kids can't afford that much food," fifth-grader Miley Villa said.

Villa is also part of the leadership team at her school, which she chose to join on her own. She not only likes helping her peers but she hopes her service goes beyond the school walls.

"I like helping out with people and I like helping out the country and the community," Villa said.

Kendrick Elementary also has one lesson in mind when teaching their students to give back.

"It's important to know that we're all connected, and as long as we know that we're all working together we're all on the same team and we all want people to be successful," Hoffman said.

Wednesday is the last day to bring food to Kendrick Elementary School, but Pack of Hope accepts donations year-round. The most wanted food items on the list are:

  • Cold cereal - individual packaged (5/8 oz. - 1 oz bowl size)
  • 100 percent juice - individual cartons/bottles (6.75 oz - 10 oz)
