Study says Waco is the No. 7 city where you are most likely to be in a fatal DUI crash

Waco is the No. 7 city where you are most likely to be in a fatal DUI wreck in Texas for cities with over 50,000 residents, a study by ValuePenguin says.

According to the study, Waco had more DUI-related fatalities than Arlington, a city about three times the size. There are roughly 4.27 DUI deaths per 100,000 residents in Waco. 

Across Texas, there were 17,434 car crashes which involved a drunken driver in 2016. Texas is eighth in the United States for DUI fatalities.

The top ten worst large cities in Texas for fatal DUI crashes include: 

  1. Midland
    - 5.70 DUI deaths per 100,000 residents
  2. Odessa
    - 5.34 DUI deaths per 100,000 residents
  3. Baytown
    - 5.11 DUI death per 100,000 residents
  4. Dallas
    - 4.62 DUI deaths per 100,000 residents
  5. Edinburg
    - 4.32 DUI deaths per 100,000 residents
  6. Irving
    - 4.32 DUI deaths per 100,000 residents
  7. Waco
    - 4.27 DUI deather per 100,000 residents
  8. Houston
    - 4.02 DUI deaths per 100,000 residents
  9. San Antonio
    - 3.99 DUI deaths per 100,000 residents
  10. Bryan
    - 3.94 DUI deaths per 100,000 residents

In a complete list of all city and town sizes, Waco ranks 36 for most DUI fatalities.

The study was conducted by tallying the total number of fatalities caused by DUI-related crashes reported by the Texas Department of Transportation over the last three years that data is available. ValuePenguin calculated the averaged DUI fatal crashes per year and compared it to the U.S. census estimates for each Texas cities.
