A Milam County Sheriff who passed away while on vacation in Oregon was laid to rest on Monday afternoon.

Sheriff David Greene was in Portland, Oregon visiting his wife's family when he suffered a heart attack on June 27. He passed away on July 20.

Before becoming sheriff, the 65-year-old served as a Milam County constable and a game warden with the Texas Park and Wildlife Department.

"Sheriff David Greene was an incredible leader, an incredible man, and he will be missed," Milam County Sheriff Deputy Chief Chris White said.

His funeral was held at the Assembly Hall of the Bell County Exposition Center in Belton on Monday.

TPWD honored the retired game warden's service during his memorial.

"It's an honor and a privilege for us to be able to conduct this ceremony for the family and for those who have fallen," Game Warden Jake Scott said.

The county he used to serve also recognized his service by closing its offices.

"Just to show our appreciation for all that he has done for everybody in the county," Milam County Deputy District Clerk Misty Kirk said.

Greene was instrumental in starting the Milam County Sheriff's Office "Brown Santa" program, which raised money for children's Christmas presents.

"The county will never be the same without him," Milam County District Clerk Karen Berry said.

"We were friends for a very long time. Our boys grew up together," Berry said. "He was a wonderful leader of Milam County. He will be greatly missed and this was a great tribute to him."

Greene was buried at Walkers Creek Cemetery during a private service.

"He [was] very nice, very sweet and he [had] the David Greene smile. No one would ever have that smile," Milam County resident Shannon Kornegay said.

He is survived by his wife Janell Greene, their two sons Casey Greene and Corey Vorn Kahl and his wife Kassie, daughter-in-law Tiffany Greene, brother Gary Greene, sister Rebecca Greene Estes and three grandsons Lance, Luke and Landen.

Memorials can be made to the Sheriff David Greene Memorial Scholarship Fund: c/o Classic Bank, P.O. BOX 835 Cameron, TX 76520.
