A country band from Lubbock who performed at the country music festival where the mass shooting happened in Las Vegas is expected to have concerts in College Station and Waco this weekend.

The Josh Abbott Band will perform at the Heart of Texas Fair and Rodeo on Saturday.

On Tuesday, singer Josh Abbott said after their concert in Las Vegas on Sunday afternoon, he left the arena to check on his fiancée at the Mandalay Bay Hotel because she was not feeling well.

He recalls hearing gunshots from his hotel room and receiving a text soon after from their tour manager about the active shooter situation.

“I was watching helplessly above as you could just see everyone running around and you could hear the shots being fired and it was hard watching it happen and not being able to do anything about it,” Abbott said.

The country star said while the massacre happened, his band was still at the venue.

“My band, they were backstage and several of them had to take cover and they heard it and saw the bullets hitting all around them and I think several of the guys saw the guys getting shot. It’s pretty bad, it’s pretty horrific,” Abbott said.

He said being there will be an experience they will never forget.

“I think there would be questions, are we ready to play? Are you guys able to go up there and perform a show for the fans or are you going to be up there dreading it the whole time worried that someone out there is going to be a shooter?” Abbott said.

He added they would like to honor the victims of the mass shooting at some point.

At least 59 people were killed and more than 500 people were injured in the massacre in Las Vegas.
