This Sunday, remember to set your clocks forward an hour, and check your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, 60 percent of home fire deaths occur due to defective smoke alarms. Typically, smoke alarms fail because of dead or disconnected batteries.

Temple Fire and Rescue issued a press release on Thursday, offering tips to residents regarding smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

Some of the most important tips include testing smoke alarms monthly, replacing all smoke alarms once they are 10 years old, and cleaning alarms according to manufacturers' instructions.

If you're a new home owner, make sure to install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home.

Temple Fire and Rescue also suggested testing carbon monoxide alarms, which detect deadly, colorless, odorless, poisonous gas. Additionally, develop an escape plan with your family or housemates with two ways out of each room.

For people that are unable to buy or install alarms, Temple Fire and Rescue offers free installation services. To schedule an appointment, call 298-5682 during normal business hours.
