According to the Texas Department of Transportation, there has been on death on Texas roadways every day since 2000.

The 16-year streak was reached on Monday. In an effort to end it, TxDOT is starting the #EndTheStreakTX campaign.

The campaign hopes to remind drivers to stay alert, obey traffic laws, and “take personal responsibility behind the wheel.”

“Every day for the past 16 years, somebody has lost a spouse, child, friend or neighbor on Texas roadways,” said TxDOT Executive Director James Bass in a press release. “These deadly crashes are a sobering reminder that we must do everything in our power to stay focused and responsible. Let’s end the streak.”

According to TxDOT, more than 55,000 people have died since 2000.

TxDOT is asking people to change their social media profile pictures to a black image to raise awareness for the campaign. The image can be downloaded here.
