UMHB football rolls over ETBU 59-22

The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team exploded for 24 third quarter points to blow open a tight game as the Cru rolled to a 59-22 win over East Texas Baptist University in a top 20 showdown Saturday in Marshall. UMHB improves to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The loss drops the Tigers to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the ASC on the year.

The game was tied at 14 at halftime after the Cru committed four first half turnovers. UMHB scored on Blake Jackson’s 23-yard pass to Wykeyhe Walker early in the third quarter. Markeith Miller and Jackson then wrapped scoring rounds around a John Mowery field goal as the Cru opened up a 38-14 lead going to the fourth quarter. Jackson added a 12-yard scoring strike to Austin Collins and Haston Adams tacked on a 50-yard fumble return for a score to make it 52-14. Jourdan McNeill’s four-yard TD run and a two-point conversion cut the gap to 52-22 before Miller closed out the scoring with a four-yard touchdown run with 42 seconds left.

ETBU took an 8-0 lead on McNeill’s TD run and a two-point conversion before Jackson hit Bryce Wilkerson with a 47-yard scoring strike to cut it to 8-7. Day’Lonzo Freeman added a six-yard scoring run to make it 14-7 before Jackson and Wilkerson hooked up on a 74-yard catch and run to tie the game.

Jackson tied the UMHB single-game record with 359 yards passing and he threw for four scores and ran for another. Wilkerson caught seven passes for 160 yards and two scores. Miller also ran for two touchdowns. Teidrick Smith and Tevin Smith led the Cru defense with 11 tackles apiece and the Cru recorded five sacks.

Dru Smith threw for 202 yards for the Tigers and Chase Sojka caught 11 passes for 71 yards. McNeill ran for 36 yards and two touchdowns. Caleb Taylor and Ty Parsons led ETBU with 11 tackles each.

The Cru held the Tigers high-powered offense to 358 yards, almost 330 yards below their season average. UMHB finished with 494 yards of total offense and went over 56 points for the sixth straight game to open the season.

UMHB will now return home to host Hardin-Simmons next Saturday at 1:00 PM in another crucial ASC contest. The Cowboys are 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the ASC on the season after beating Howard Payne on Saturday.
