Killeen Police and the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs are warning the elderly to beware of a fraud scheme.

In a release from the Killeen Police, the department said scammers are calling people pretending to be V.A. representatives.  They tell victims that they can increase their benefits with the V.A. by participating in the call.

In the conversation the scammer gets identifying information that is used to commit fraud.  Perpetrators have used information to withdraw money from victims’ bank accounts or activate new credit cards. Authorities say new cards can easily be opened with the information from these calls.

Killeen Police are asking anyone who believes they were a victim to contact them and file a report.
