A well-known day spa in McLennan County closed its doors, leaving customers who had already purchased gift cards or had appointments with many questions.

The Spa at Canyon Oaks in Crawford announced on its website on Monday it was filing for bankruptcy and it was listing the real estate for sale. The Harrell & Associates listing for the $1 million property indicates it was posted on April 28.

A phone recording when customers dial the business on Monday said “The Spa at Canyon Oaks is permanently closed until further notice.”

Jimmy Jones who said his wife, Glinda, spent $165 on a voucher for three massages at the day spa, but had not used it yet.

Glinda Jones has not received the statement that includes that charge but now she has filed a dispute with her credit card company.

"I think my wife was done wrong because they should've known on July the 5th, they were going to declare bankruptcy two or three weeks later. They should've been honest with my wife. I don't think they were,” Jones said.

The customers News Channel 25 spoke with, including Jones, were not alerted they were closing.

“165 dollars is not a lot to us, but it’s just the principle by the number of people who are going to be affected by this, hundreds of people,” Jones said.

La Bella Salon and Beauty Lounge was allowing customers with vouchers from Canyon Oaks to redeem one service at their location on Monday. On their Facebook page, they mentioned their service providers gave up a month of pay to accommodate these free services.

"Phone calls have come in since 6:30 a.m. and we have been booking appointments back to back all day long,” Leslie Engledow said.

However, they were already completely booked until the end of August before 5 p.m. on Monday with 500 customers from the Crawford day spa.

"It was very overwhelming. They have a lot of outstanding gift cards. I wish we could do every one of them but we're just not physically able,” Engledow said.

Kaylee Schnizer who was able to redeem her gift card from Canyon Oaks at La Bella on Monday said she wished she would have received a call about the closing or would have received a refund.

“I was upset… because I was looking forward to the massage,” Schnizer said.

News Channel 25 tried to reach out to other owner of the property and president of the Spa at Canyon Oaks and as of 11 p.m. they had not heard back from that person.

Ultimate Escape Spa & Wellness Center and the Skin and Body Refinery, Pura Vida Day Spa and Salon, Facelogic Spa Waco and Melissa Tucker are taking gift cards from customers for certain services. Each provider may have restrictions on the number and type of services customers can redeem with the Canyon Oaks vouchers.

As of 1 p.m. on Monday, the Spa at Canyon Oaks had not filed for bankruptcy, according to the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Texas.
