The city of West reached another milestone in the rebuilding process, opening brand new basketball courts Saturday.
Dallas Maverick, Mavs Foundation, helped unveil the new court at Parker’s Park. The Mavs foundation, the non-profit affiliate of the NBA team paid for the new court.
The opening of the courts is just the latest addition in the effort to restore the area. In April 2013 the park was destroyed following the explosion at the fertilizer plant that killed 15.
The playground and basketball court completion are a part of a larger effort from the Parker’s Park Project. The son of a West firefighter, Joey Pustejovsky, who died in the blast told his family of his desire to rebuild the park.
West Mayor, Tommy Muska, thinks the new court will help in the community’s healing process.
"It’s one of those benchmarks one of those things that the city needed to get back it needed to rebuild," Muska said.
